The Naked City (1948) - a post World War 2 crime procedural filmed on location in the Big Apple.A typical murder mystery with a few standard issue good guy homicide detectives working the case- but that is not what merits this film a Criterion re-release.It is the stunning location shots of all different parts of New York city, the flawed villians and a well staged climax.Directed by Jules Dassin this movie is beautiful to look at- even as we follow the police following lead after lead to apprehend to bathtub murderer. The new DVD has a commentary track by the scriptwriter and 2 30 minute featurettes by film historians. On some levels this is imperfect film -but it is worth seeing for the time capsule shots of a Big Apple that does not exist anymore.
