On Dangerous Ground - Melodramatic 1952 noir flick starring Robert Ryan as a violent cop.A story in 2 parts- this Nicholas Ray directed movie starts out in the city as we follow 3 detectives on their hunt for a couple of cop-killers.Ryan's character is so brutal(although he gets the info he is seeking) that the police commisioner sends him out of town until the publicity dies down. The Second part of the story is in the frozen north- Ryan's character is added to a posse seeking out a vicious killer. The Bernard Hemarn score is great- but almost overwhelming - until we reach the climax -then it all fits together. The movie also stars Ida Lupino. The DVD has an informative commentary track. I love Bernard Herman's music but I agree it seems overpowerting for most of the film. If particular historical note is Ida Lupino. Did you realize that she is one of the few female directors in Film Noir? Have to admit this is not one of my faves but the car chases are really some great camera work if I remember correctly.
