Has anyone seen this movie? I know its film noir but it also isn't. It can't be, we need a new genre to define this film on the paranoia about communist takeover in the 1950's...about pick-pockets and a girl named Candy and a seen-it-all "stoolie". This has the seedy urban environment, but the happy ending, the spider lady without the sticky fingers. Maybe it's just poor film noir, but its a classic. I'm not sure...

Re: pickup on south street
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 5:45 PMThis is one of my favorites! The opening sequence on the train is sublime and what great character actors. I think this is classic noir, paranoia about commuies fits right in, but you are correct that this is considered a "b" movie. The director Sam Fuller is a trip and I've been watching some of his other "B"'s. Very twisted stuff. -

Thu, January 25, 2007 - 4:30 PMPickup on South Street :Stylish Samuel Fuller flick about a pickpocket, stolen microfilm and a stoolie.Set in the big apple in the early 50s- this movie has great chemistry between Richard Widmark(Skip McCoy) and his mark played by the sultry Jean Peters.Widmark is excellent in this - as usual. The DVD is chock full o goodies- 2 interviews with Fuller, several Fuller trailers and a 20 page booklet with essays on Fuller and the film.A great mix of crime procedural and romance- the romance is so unbelievable on paper- but Widmark and Peters play it so perfectly that you buy into it.Thelma Ritter is perfect as the sweet little stool pigeon that sells ties.If you enjoy hardboiled crime dramas I suggest renting or buying this one when you can. A+
